えひめ丸事故10周年慰霊祭 The 10th Memorial

昨日はバレンタインデーでしたね。私は誰にもチョコレートを渡しませんでした。もともと日本の「義理」の慣習と「便乗商法」に抵抗があるひねくれ者ですが、それより今年は暖かいハワイから雪模様の日本に戻ったばかり、ぽっかり忘れてしまったのです。
ハワイの日差しが強かったから、などとカミュばりの実存主義でないとすれば、チョコを渡す人の限定に苦慮するよりはいっそ博愛主義に徹したい、という気持ちが働いたからかもしれません。
今年の慰霊祭は10周年にあたり、ハワイ現地では2月9日、例年の倍の時間をかけ、倍以上の人々が集まって行なわれました。
とくに、昨年12月はじめそれぞれ5日違いで就任した二―ル・アバクロンビーハワイ州新知事と中村時弘愛媛県新知事が揃って出席されたことは象徴的で、10年の節目にふさわしい慰霊祭となりました。
亡くなった9人の方の慰霊と遺族の方々の気持ちを変わらず尊重しつつ、今が新たな交流を生み出す時機です。キーワードは中村知事の語る「未来志向」でしょう。

It was the St. Valentine Day yesterday. I didn’t give chocolates to anyone at all. Originally, I haven’t thought well about the Japanese custom of giri nor its opportunistic marketing. On top of that, I had just forgotten it coming back from warm Hawai’i to snowy Japan.
If I don’t excuse myself with the existentialism by Albert Camus, I might have preferred being a philanthropist instead of struggling who and how many people to give chocolates.
Well, this year, we had the tenth anniversary of the Memorial, and more than double numbers of people gathered taking the double hours than usual to conduct the memorial ceremony on February 9th at the Kakaako Waterfront Park in Hawai’i.
Especially, it was symbolic that both of new Governors, Hawai’i State Governor Neil Abecrombie and Ehime Prefecture Governor, Tokihiro Nakamura attended the ceremony, which made it suitable for the tenth Memorial.
Now it’s time to generate the new positive exchange over remembering nine victims and respecting the emotion of the bereaved families continuously. The keyword is “The future mind” as Nakamura said.

【慰霊祭点描】
Some thoughts about the Memorial

・ 公式献花の後の一般自由献花が続くなか、静かな響きが聞こえてくるのに気づきました。昨年インターンとして愛媛県で活躍したハワイ大学院生のカラニさんが、慰霊碑に向かってハワイの伝統的な神への祈りをあげてくれていたのです。
それは、昨年カラニさんが、愛媛各地で披露してくれた響きであり、私にはもう懐かしいとさえ感じるようになっていました。

I noticed a calm resonant voice heard during the time of general flower offerings. A UH graduate student, Kalani, who did a good job as one of the internships in Ehime last year, was offering the traditional chant for Hawai’i’ Gods in front of the monument.
That was the prayer that Kalani has presented at many places in Ehime last year and I felt it even already familiar for me now.

・ 植樹のほかになされたのが、ボランティア清掃の方々のための、水道蛇口の設置です。これまで慰霊碑近くに水道がなく、下のほうからバケツに汲んで運び上げなければなりませんでした。
これは、ハワイ日米協会とえひめ丸追悼協会両方の会長を務められているホーキンス氏でなければ発想実現されなかった、細やかな配慮です。
追悼協会は、いろいろな団体の清掃日分担スケジュール表を毎年作成し、各団体はそれにしたがい毎週土曜日に清掃を行なうので、年間を通じむらやだぶりがないのです。

What was conducted besides the tree planting ceremony was the setup of the faucet for the volunteer cleanup activity. There used to be no water supply near the monument and people had to carry buckets of water up from far downward.
This considerable idea would not have been hit upon and realized without Edwin Hawkins, who is the President of both Japan America Society of Hawai’i and Ehime Maru Memorial Association.
Ehime Maru Memorial Association arranges the schedule of all volunteer groups every year so that each organization can participate in the cleanup every Saturday systematically without any mess.

・　 慰霊祭の数日前の朝カカアコ公園を訪れたとき、ハワイ在住の日本人のカップルが手を合わせていらっしゃいました。個人的に縁はないけれど、日本人として祈りにくるということです。ある遺族の方も同じような人を目撃され、「ただそれをとてもありがたく思う」とおっしゃっていました。
また、現地ボランティアと同様、愛媛でもさまざまなかたちで支えている人たちがいます。たとえば、宇和島から毎年自費で遺族のお世話をしながらハワイを訪れ、献花の花輪を手配してくださっている方など。
　　 そして私も、3年前自然な思いで現地に足を運んだとおり、今後もずっと、9人の魂を追悼すると共に、国境のない人々の心の平和を希いたいと思います。

I saw a couple of Japanese people praying in front of the Monument when I visited the Kakaako Park a few days before the ceremony. I heard that they do so as Japanese even though they do not have any personal relationship.
And on the day of the 10th Memorial, one of the bereaved family members told me that she witnessed the unknown people similar to them and said,
“I just appreciate it so much.”
　　　　　Also, there are people who have given support in Ehime like the volunterrs in Hawai'i. For example, there is a person who visits Hawai'i every year at his own expense taking care of the bereaved families and arrange the wrearh for the memorial.
　　　　　So I, as a person who just naturally came to Kakaako Waterfront Park three years ago, would like not only to keep commemorating the soles of nine victims, but also to hope people’s peace of mind without boundary.

寒中お見舞い申し上げます。

早いもので、今年2011年はえひめ丸事故10周年になります。
そこで、現地カカアコ公園の慰霊碑の前では、ハワイ日米協会のご尽力により、いつもより大きな10周年慰霊祭を開催することになっています。

愛媛ハワイ会では、15人からなる10周年慰霊祭参加ツアーを作りました。まもなく出発予定です。
愛媛県からは、中村新知事も参加されることになりました。
姉妹都市お相手のハワイ州においても、昨秋前後して、新しい知事が選出されました。
公式訪問で両者初対面が実現しますね。

10年前の事故と、その後の10年間に起こったこと、そしてこれから始まる愛媛とハワイの新たな展開を10周年の節目を大切に迎えることによって繋ぎ、歴史を刻んでいきましょう。

It's been very cold in Ehime. I miss the weather in Hawai'i.

This year in 2011, we will have the 10th Memorial since the Ehime-maru submarine Accident.
Now a bigger sacale ceremony has been planned to comemorate the 10th year in front of the monument at Kakaako Park in Hawai'i, thanks to the Japan-US Association in Hawai'i .

Ehime Hawai'i Association oranized the 10th Memorial ceremony tour with 15 members, which is going to leave soon next month.
The newly elected Governor Nakamura is supposed to fly to Honolulu to attend the ceremony.
Hawai'i State Governor was also newly elected last fall.
It is good that both new Governors will meet for the first time at Ehime Prefecture's official visit this time.

We could connect what happened for the past 10 years and the future interchange between Ehime and Hawai'i that is going to start from now on, in order to create our history.

ハワイ国際映画祭で、愛媛県四国中央市の県立高校を舞台にした映画「書道ガールズ！！私たちの甲子園」が選ばれ、22日と23日（ハワイタイム）上映されます。上映前には加戸知事のメッセージも現れるはずです。ハワイ在住の方はGo！

The film "Shodo Girls!!" was selected for HIFF (Hawaii International Film Festival) and will be shown on 22nd and 23rd. The special message by Ehime Governor Kato will appear beforehand.

もともと、これは愛媛の南海放送が取材したドキュメントが全国放送され、それがきっかけとなって日本テレビにより映画化されたものです。地域がを上げて一致協力し、地元のみなさんが大事にされています。地域の現状、町興し、日本文化の紹介としても、ぜひ、ハワイの人々、日系人の方々にみていただきたいですね。

Originally, this movie was made based on the documentary that Nankai Broadcast Co., (RNB) in Ehime made. The documentary was aired nationwide, then NTV created the film. All local people in Shikokuchuo city cooperated for the shooting and they take care of the film so much. We'd like people in Hawai'i, especially those who have ancestries from Japan, to see this film to know a Japanese local and Japanese cultures.

求む温州みかんの木！ Mandarin orange tree

さきに連絡します。

来年はえひめ丸事故10周忌となります。そこでハワイのカカアコ公園にある慰霊碑いつもより少し大きい慰霊祭を計画しています。
記念行事の一つは植樹です。さて、何の木がいいでしょう。えひめだからやはり温州みかんを植えたい、ということになりました。
ところがハワイ州は生態系保護のため殊に検疫の厳しいところです。日本から持ち込むことは不可能とわかりました。
もし、ハワイ州内で、日系人の方や、お知り合いで、庭に温州みかんの木がある、といった情報をおもちでしたら、ぜひお知らせください。
また、本土でも結構です。米国内ですから。

I need information!!

Does anyone have a mandarine orange tree in Hawai'i?
I'm looking for a sapling of mandarin orange.
We will have the tenth memorial service of Ehime-maru/submarine incident in Hawai'i
next February and we are planning to plant a tree near the monument.

Ehime is one of the big mandarine orange producer and the Prefectural flower is orange flower.
We want to have the "mandarine" orange because of that.
It's almost impossible to bring in from Japan because of the severe quarantine.
But it is OK to bring in the plant from Mainland because it's domestic.

If you have one either in Hawai'i or Mainland, please let me know!

第7回えひめハワイデイイベント終了 Hawai'i Day Event completed successfully

8月8日、ハワイにおけるハワイの日（８０８）、第7回えひめハワイデイは盛会のうちに終了しました。
開会前には、ハワイアンバンドMANGOの友情出演ですてきな生演奏に酔いしれ、プログラム開始の気運も高まりいざスタート！

On August 8th, the day of Hawai'i (808), the 7th Ehime Hawai'i Day Event was finished with applause. A nice Hawai'ian band MANGO gave a live performance for friendship before the opening, which made us ready to start the program.

ハワイから来松してくださったハワイ日米協会会長エド・ホーキンスさんには、州知事リンダ・リングルさんのメッセージを読み上げてから御本人の挨拶をいただきました。

Ed Hawkins, President of Hawai'i Japan US Association came to Matsuyama and introduced the message from HI State Governor Linda Lingle before his own speech.

あとはどんどん21組の出演グループが熱演を繰り広げ、時間通りフィニッシュ。

All 21 groups got on stage one after another without pause and gave their performances energetically. Amazingly we could finish just on time.

ハワイデイイベントはあさってです/The Event is coming soon!

第7回えひめハワイデイイベントは明後日、ハワイにおけるハワイの日（8月8日）と
迫ってきました。
The Seventh Ehime Hawai’I Day Event on August 8th, (the day of Hawai’i in Hawai’i) is just on the corner.

ご案内のチラシ（今年一新）では、１３：３０～１６：００としていますが、
現在松山のホテルで出演している、ハワイ島ヒロを拠点とするハワイアンバンド
“マンゴー“が友情出演してくれることになりました。
また、今年は昨年の倍近い21団体が出演してくれます。
そこで、以下のように若干時間を変更します。
A Hawai’ian band “Mango”, which is playing at ANA hotel in Matsuyama, is going to perform before the opening as a volunteer.
And the number of the performing groups almost doubled this year (21 groups).
So, we will extend the schedule a little as follows;

2010年第7回えひめハワイデイイベントはもうすぐ

今年も8月1日「愛媛ハワイの日」が近づいてきました。今年のえひめハワイデイイベントは8月8日日曜日に開かれます。

August 1st is "Ehime Hawai'i Day". This year, the Ehime Hawai'i Day Event will be held on August 8th.

今年で7年目を迎えた「愛媛ハワイの日」は、いよてつ高島屋8階スカイドームにてイベントを開催します。ハワイな一日をどうぞお楽しみください。

We will have it for the seventh time this year. The event will be held at Sky Dome, on the 8th floor in Takashimaya Department Store. Please enjoy the day of the Hawai'i taste.

とくに、今年は 現地ハワイから、ハワイ日米協会会長エド・ホーキンスさんが来松し、開会にメッセージを添えてくださいます。また、それぞれ参加グループの熱のこもったパフォーマンスのほかに、二人のインターン生によるワークショップなどもりだくさんとなっています。

Especially this year, Mr. Hawkins, the President of Japan-U.S. Association in Hawai'i will visit Matsuyama and he is going to give us a message. Two internship students will have workshops respectively in addition to the powerful performances by the participating groups.

６月１２日　子規記念博物館にて、ハワイについての講演会がありました。

There was an open lecture about Hawai'i on June 12th at Shiki Memorial Museum.

講師は関西学院大学総合政策学部教授　山中速人氏、ハワイ大学でソーシャルワークを学ばれた後、イーストウエストセンター助手も経験されています。

The lecturer was Hayato Yamanaka, Professor of Kwansei Gakuin University. He studied social work at UH and has worked for the East West Center.

テーマは　多文化共生の日米比較～オバマを育てたハワイはモデルになれるか？～

The theme was "The comparison between Japan and the U.S. about co-existance in the diversified culture ~Can Hawai'i, where Obama was grown up, be a model?~

講演要旨は7月9日付愛媛新聞に掲載されました。

The summary of the lecture was put on Ehime Newspaper on July 9th.

講演には松山大学人文学部英文学科Ｊａｙ先生が今春から始めたハワイについて学ぶゼミの学生も
参加しました。彼らの何人かは8月に行なわれるえひめハワイデーイベントにボランティアスタッフとして
お手伝いしていただくことになっています。

Students from the English Department in Matsuyama University attended it. They belong to the class to study Hawai'i, which has just started this spring. Some of them are going to be a volunteer staff for the coming Ehime Hawai'i Day event.

7月21日、松山大学のジェイ・アーケンブラック先生（ハワイ、ハワイ大学出身）のゼミでハワイ大学インターン生のカラニとロビンが出張講義をしました。

The intern students from the University of Hawai'i, Kalani and Robin gave a lecture at the class by professor Jay Ercanbrack, who is also from Hawai'i and UH.

ロビンは自分のハワイ生活、そしてカラニはハワイ諸島全体の言語、自然、文化を、たくさんの美しい写真と共に紹介してくれました。

Robin introduced her Hawai'i life, and Kalani explained about the language, nature and culture in the whole Islands of Hawai'i using a lot of beautiful pictures.

二人はこのほかにも県内各地でいろいろな活動をしています。

They have done this kind of activities at many other places in Ehime.
